Clutter Corrections is a resource that can help homeowners explore the reasons why we hold onto clutter, the negative emotional effects it can have, and practical strategies for overcoming mental barriers to decluttering the home and creating a more organized and peaceful living space.

Our homes are sanctuaries, reflections of ourselves, and sometimes…repositories of stuff.  While a few well-placed keepsakes add character, an overabundance of clutter can negatively impact our mental and physical well-being. Understanding the reasons behind our attachment to clutter and the emotional toll it takes is crucial for creating a more organized and peaceful living space.

Why Do We Hold Onto Clutter?

There are many common reasons why spring cleaning and letting go of clutter can be surprisingly difficult. Because objects often trigger memories and emotions, holding onto a childhood toy or a china set passed down from a grandparent can feel like preserving a piece of the past.  There may be a feeling of loss when discarding an item. On the other hand–and depending on the volume of belongings–knowing what to keep and what to toss can be a seemingly overwhelming decision to make. Sometimes we are compelled to hold onto items simply because of the amount of time or money we spent in acquiring them. Or we may fear future lack and feel the need to hold onto items “just in case.” No matter the justification for our stuff, living in a cluttered environment can have a significant impact on our well-being.

The Emotional Impact of Clutter

While seemingly a physical issue, clutter can also cause an emotional impact. Studies have shown that the inability to manage clutter can contribute to feelings of shame, inadequacy and self-blame. Visual clutter bombards the brain with stimuli, making it difficult to relax and focus while hindering our ability to concentrate and complete tasks. Disorganized spaces can also make it challenging to find what we need, lead to wasted time and frustration, and potentially create tension within families as a result. We can alleviate these negative impacts when we apply the following methods to begin the mental work of letting go of our clutter.

Five Strategies for Overcoming Mental Obstacles to Decluttering

1.     Shift Your Mindset. Instead of viewing your decluttering project as yet another job on your to-do list, view it as a way to create space for new experiences and positive energy.

2.   Start small. Begin your project with a manageable area like a drawer or shelf. Even a little progress can help with building momentum to keep going.

3.  Ask yourself key questions. Have I used this in the past year? Do I have an actual use for it now? Does this item help or hinder how I’d ultimately like to spend my time?                                                                            If the answer doesn’t satisfy you, then consider letting it go.

4.     Visualize the benefits. Remind yourself of the improved sense of calm, clarity, and productivity that awaits a decluttered space.

5.     Seek support. Don’t be afraid to enlist the help of friends, family, or professional organizers for extra motivation and guidance.

As you continue your decluttering journey, it’s a good idea to invest in containers, shelves and organizers to keep frequently used items handy and pack away seasonal items or those used infrequently. You can also generate some income and reduce waste by selling any unwanted items.
